It may come as a shock to many people, but the latest low carb, high protein, and high fat is a fad. But this one is definitely, definitely the right one. No question about it. On the radio today a doctor was talking about how a patient ignored the standard advice and did her own thing. Her type 2 diabetes miraculously went away. This must therefore be the cure of all ills. I’m not an expert, and I doubt it. I’m not an expert on global warming, but I don’t doubt that. Why? A definitive body of evidence. All I’m hearing about the new diet is anecdotes. And more to the point, this diet sounds very much like the Atkins diet. No one in their right mind would say they were doing that.
The radio discussion reached the point where a doctor said that the easily broken down carbs in a baked potato contained up to six teaspoons of sugar. Gasp! He was saying that potatoes are a bad thing, because sugar is bad and causes diabetes. I’m hearing the same about all the fructose in fruit! Luckily, by coincidence I eat little of neither.
The great news that could take the pressure off the National Health Service has been withheld from the public. The food industry and the drug companies have their own interests and one can make us fat, and the other can keep us healthy with pills. It sounds reasonably plausible, such as antivirus companies releasing viruses in to the wild so they can sell software to fix them. Companies just want your money, and they want returns on their investment. Ask people who say these things to produce evidence. Although, given the denials of the tobacco industry about the dangers of smoking over decades, I can appreciate the easy way of jumping to conclusions. Life is short, and we are right.
One thing you can be sure about is that most of the things you knew or though you knew were wrong. It’s difficulty to realise what you knew was wrong. Just be prepared for change, be flexible, and beware of magic fixes. After all, people believe in prayer, homeopathy, and psychic healers.
So I’m going to keep eating a varied diet, excercise, and wait to see what the next superfood some Hollywood A-Lister claims is the new big thing.
And what ever happened to those shoes that had the rocking motion when you walked. They were going to make very one super fit. That lasted at best a year. Croc sandals lasted longer!
