Hotel Toasters

I really thought I knew my way around toast. There are toasters in hotels which have a conveyor method, where you place a slice of bread in the machine, and it is slowly “toasted”. The problem is the once is never enough.

There was a lady next to me putting her bread in to her machine for four passes to get to something that looks like toast. My slices looked passable but not up to what I’d expect. I was offered the chance to use her machine for the second toasting, but being experienced in such matters I decided to use mine for a second time. This turned out to be a bit of an error.

Within seconds my bread had turned black with smoke billowing and me wafting my hands around. Fortunately, the spotlight above the toaster was also linked to an extractor fan. But just to be sure, I switched off and let one of the breakfast staff know.

There are three dials on hotel toasters, and one thing I have learned is to never touch them. So why for fucks sake did the staff leave them like this. The dials were only turned half way. These are industrial machines that should only be controlled by a trained professional.

I know that trying to toast a croissant would be stupid, and many people have made that error, but bread is what its designed for.

This isn’t about toast. I’m angry. I’m angry about some of the work emails that have been sent to me. I’m angry that my work situation is a pain. And I’m angry that I’m leaving (or hope to be leaving). I’m a bit worried that my interview won’t be a success, even though it feels like a good fit for me. I’m hacked off because I didn’t get redundancy. And ‘m angry because I feel I’m getting beaten up.

I’m worried that work will realise that I’ve decided to go. And I’m worried that I’ll have to work all of my notice. And I’m worried about my reaction to this.

Leaving an getting the job I want, on my own will feel amazing. I can do this. I know that.

Not bothered about my 400 word target today. Or am I? There are so many great things to learn. You just have to find a new place. A new place where the toasters work. Maybe, everyone has the right idea about toast. Blah, blah, blah!
