I feel compelled to write something. So much is happening in the world and I wonder what will be squeezed in to school history books in the future. That is if books still exist. And I wonder which version of the future will be recorded. After all, it is said that history is written by the victors. I’m assuming that there are different sides involved here. Only in the distant future may we discover how many interests are at place. Every day, it seems that there are more by the day. And given that historians are still unpicking why and what happened in the Great War (WWI) we may just have to just carry on and not even have the chance to not learn from the lessons of the past.
When I was in town the other day, there was a Socialist Worker stall. I heard them complaining about Thatcher and her legacy. But given their age (and mine), the biggest influence on their lives would have been WWII, the depression of the 1930’s and WWI. It is very easy to pick out one or two people as the bad or good guy. This should be a lesson we should learn, but we don’t.
And here, I’ve fallen in to a trap. I said “we”. I have no idea what that means in this context. I think I know what “me” means, but that’s a description of what the conscious me is, and science so far has failed to explain that.
Parents have a job on their hands when children question what’s going on. Perhaps keeping it simple from the view of your tribe and not knowing much is best.
Best just plod on and see what the future holds.
