New Year’s Ritual

It’s not commonly known, but if New Year’s Eve is not celebrated on December 31st every year, the New Year will not happen. Luckily for us, this always happens. It’s similar to worshipping the Sun god. This isn’t commonplace, but it is happening. I know that because, even though the practice of Sun god worship is out of fashion, the sun rises in the sky every day.

In the case of New Year’s Eve, the people celebrating (as with many rituals) have no idea of what they are doing. And if they stop to think about it, they may start asking uncomfortable questions and stop doing it. This is clearly a mystical, spiritual of the old fashioned kind. Look at the evidence:

  1. There is music
  2. There is dancing
  3. There is a strange dance and song that no-one cab remember the words to. They also don’t even know the correct moves. And a couple of years ago the Queen was criticised when she was doing it right. 99% of the population thought she was just not that in to it, which judging by the picture showed that she wasn’t that amused. Luckily for us, at least one person is doing it right. The only worry is that she is 92 years old now, and our lesser dance may not work as well as we would like.
  4. There is sacrifice. The Gods of New Year’s Eve accept a whole day of hangover from many people in return for them bringing in the New Year.

Sometimes, thinking of great ideas and typing them out isn’t all that easy. It’s worse when you think you have a great idea that could go on and on, only to realise that all you have is 250 words!

There is another thing which happens at this time of year. They are New Year’s resolutions. It goes a little like this:

“If I say something out loud, it will become real so, I’m going to start going to the gym three times a week from now on. Or, I’m going to give up drinking for all of Janurary. Or, I’m going on a diet and lose weight, When at the same time knowing that you just either are doing it to:

  1. justify your current excesses
  2. Look impressive to friends and family
  3. Make others look less virtuous
  4. Give it a couple of weeks and then live with the usual disappointment that goes along with the fact that you’ll give up, feel bad about it, and then forget about the whole thing until the cycle starts all over again next year

And that’s it!”

My advice for resolutions is:

  1. Avoid doing things that harm you
  2. Focus on doing things that improve you and your circumstances. Even the smallest steps will take you a long way
  3. If you’re worried refer to 1 & 2
  4. Be lucky!

Happy New Year!
