There’ll be Brexits Over the White Cliffs of Dover

This title came to me a couple of days ago and even more than ever, I have no idea where it will end up – A bit like Brexit, or not Brexit!

This is a play on words of the song, There’ll Be Bluebirds Over the White Cliffs of Dover. This is obvious, but there is a reason for saying this. It was the sound track – or at least one of them in our World War II. And I don’t think people would have looked back so fondly on that war without the music and our wartime sweethearts. We know it was bloody awful, but this is a little bit of sugar coating, and dare I say propaganda, which isn’t a bad thing if used correctly.

Up to this point, I’ve invoked the spirit of WWII. Now it’s time for the cliff edge analogy. If Brexit negotiations fail, we won’t be flying over the cliffs, we’ll be falling off them. Perhaps, if we travel fast enough it may look as if we are flying for a moment, until reality takes over. And in this case we won’t have our Bluebirds – which I’m guessing were Spitfires to protect us.

If you’ve ever seen Wag the Dog you’ll know that in times of crisis you’ll need a narrative with news reports and a popular following to get the public involved. We haven’t done this yet – only we might have, but I think it was a grime artist or something like that. All I can say about that is there may be many stages with many directors and none of them have a real idea about the narrative, never mind where it ends. What we need is a Dustin Hoffman character to direct the show, but given how it works out for him, I wouldn’t expect many people to step up. That was a spoiler alert if you didn’t know that he gets bumped off at the end – that’s the suggestion anyway. I’m guessing that all the creative types were on the Remain side, but they were all to disorganised to work on a convincing case to stay in the EU and that’s why we’re in the mess that we are now.

That covers everything I wanted to convey:

  1. It’s about WWII
  2. Oh yeah. The French, I forgot to mention them!

Thank you, future reader, and future me for reading this. Hopefully, the lights will still be on in a few months time. And in a few years time we can get together and listen to the old songs that helped us through a tough old time. Stiff upper lip, Dunkirk spirit, and tallyho!
