I was stuck in a conversation that went along the lines of “if the universe is expanding, what is it expanding into?”, that many people bring up in a “we don’t know anything” kind of way. Who knows what is real? For a start, the edge of the universe is 13.8 billion light years away. There may be stuff further away, but we’ll never see it. In short, the edge of the universe is far enough in time and space not to worry about. Except for the fact that we are at the edge of the known universe, it all depends on where you are looking from.
The question I could have asked is “where is tomorrow?” Does tomorrow exist yet? Yesterday doesn’t exist, except in our memories. There’s no going back, entropy sees to that. There’s just too much going on to reverse. We barely have any control over tomorrow, but we can give our direction a tiny nudge and see if we can make the smallest of changes for the better. And no-one knows what’s going to happen even a second in to the future. It’s a probability game. The farther you are away in time the greater effect it has on an outcome. It does depend on what the expected outcome was. For example, I might have a heart attack tomorrow, but it’s far more likely to have a heart attack tomorrow if I was 83 years old. Knowing the probabilities of things happening across a population can be a good guide in working out what to do next, but we can’t say for sure what will.
Thinking about probabilities, it’s good to know that I may have a 2% success rate in looking for a new job. Do I accept this ratio, or do I look for help to improve it. Then, let’s say I’ll have a 10% chance of being happy in the new job. What do I need to do to improve that made up figure?
I think I’m getting to the point. Spend your time in the present to improve your time in the future. I’m getting a strange feeling that I’ve been here before! There’s a feeling that sometimes, times move on but you haven’t. Perhaps, yesterday, today, and tomorrow is just in our heads. The time maybe moving forward, but people are stuck in the past. And so, Brexit makes an appearance in to today’s thoughts!
