On the long list of things I didn’t know was that Debussy was influenced by jazz. He’s famous for his ability to allow music “just hang there”. I’ve just heard one of his pieces (not that one) and it makes you appreciate it more. There’s parts where you don’t know what’s coming next. That’s because he decided not to follow the rules of the time, and he wrote what made him happy. The music sounded very modern and not the usual classical, and for that I hope that many of the older people in the audience weren’t all that sure about it.
This is my fourth classical gig this year and I like to think I’m getting the hang of it. So far I’ve enjoyed all of them. That’s what my memory recall is telling me, and I’m not going to argue with that. With normal rock gigs I can leave with my ears ringing deciding that it wasn’t too loud, they played some decent songs I knew, and the queues weren’t too bad.
I suppose that’s a little hard on my normal gigs, but they can be hit and miss. The standard is rarely as high as trained classical musicians. This is not the usual day to day experience.
Time for part two……..
