I wasn’t in major panic mode this morning, but I had no idea where I was going next. There was lots of staring at my Interrail map and not many ideas. Strasbourg was an idea, but the the Citi Kamp was booked out for the next couple of days. It would have been as good or better than where I am now, but I needed to try something else. Avignon looks great, but it’s too close. An hour away on a fast train isn’t enough. What I did do is point myself towards Interlaken. My destination is Bern, and this is the weather forecast! I do like my tent, but he\she is getting on a bit now and booking a hostel was all in English, which means I know I have a roof over my head. It is a youth hostel, but I think I could pass for 35 at a push. At least I don’t look really old. There’s a chance to meet people too. Stopping in hotels is fine, and so are campsites, but these people are on different journeys.

My first job in the morning – after coffee – is to visit the train station and book my seat for a 4.5 hour trip with a change in Geneva. The plan is to leave here on Saturday morning and not use my extra day. I’ve been here long enough and leaving on Sunday just feels like I’m hanging around too much. A room was booked in a hostel, because I feel that I need to do it if I’m backpacking. Then I realised that it was booked for Sunday when I wanted a night on Saturday, which I went and booked too. The first night is in a mixed dorm, and I wasnt sure about doing it, then I had a think and thought that it must be fine, and any female travellers would be confident, so I went ahead because the place looked great.Planning moving days is a real pain. Part of me wants to give up and go home, then another part finds out how great Bern is and how close it is to Interlaken. I’ve lost a day faffing around, but at least I know what I’m doing tomorrow with seat booking, looking around Lypon again, and thinking about what Bern has to offer. The mixed dorm will sort itself out. A quick Google search said that these were the most common rooms. Another said that women can be thieves too!
It’s 1732 and I’ll call this a good day. I really needed to plan this ahead, but life was happening.
The next stop will be Camping Eigernordwand Grindelwald and a view of the Eiger! It looks like an hour and a helf to travel there, and if I turn up before 1500 I don’t need to book. Little by little I am travelling, but I really wish I packed a Rough Guide before setting off.
I can enjoy this evening, have a great day and maybe a river cruise tomorrow, and get the tent ready for a move early on Saturday. It may be a wet start with flashes in the sky!
For diner I’ve had a couple small beers, a very questionable pizza with no tomato base, and a grande beer to ammuse the girls behind the bar. I even asked for une verre d’eau and I got a glass of water. I’d checked this the other day, but hearing English people speaking English behind me made me do it. I’m really not sure about the pizza, but it was food, and nowhere near as good as the one I had on the first night.Perhaps this is down to the staffing change.
Not much has happeed in the last few days, but I have enjoyed just hanging around and enjoying the campsite. After all, this is a holiday and at the end of my first week. Heading off to Bern and Grindelwald will take another week, and if I make it to Vienna that could take up third week. They speak Swiss German in Bern, so I’d better start brushing up! I’m here to travel, but what I really want is to speak languages and travel. Let’s fire up Duolingo!
That’s it for now. I have some kind of plan and now I need to brush up on some German.
