Or is it the end of the decade? In the same way that December 31 1999 wasn’t the end of the last century, December 31 2019 isn’t the end of the current decade.
I think we can all agree that the new decade starts tomorrow. There’s no pint in arguing about it and spoiling the fun as we stumble out of the blocks in to the Roaring 20’s. And what a fantastic last ten years we’ve just enjoyed, if I could remember any of it. Most of it has been blanked out in my head, but lets have a think about it.
2012 was the Olympic and Paralympic year which was preceded by a couple years of expecting that it would be a disaster. And in the end it was a huge success and everyone was happy, especially after Super Saturday when Jess Enis, Mo Farah, and a long jump guy won gold medals within 44 minutes of each other. The long jump guy was Greg Rutherford and he wasn’t happy when is gold medal wasn’t the financial pot of gold he’d expected.
2016 was the year we had a referendum about something around 24th June time. I can’t remember what it was about because our memories have been wiped, or will be wiped, I can’t remember anymore. All I know is that everything will, or has to be wonderfil in the next decade. If everything isn’t going great, it will be. The ministry of information will see to that.
It can only be a good thing that I write every now an then. But then again, I haven’t been paying much attention to details.
Ah! 2014 started a blog. I knew I’d done something. And 2019 created my website.
2010 won my black belt and 2011/12 dislocated my shoulder.
Something gives me the feeling that this was a tougher decade than I though it was when I was in it. It was going so well when people in London were being nice to each other and watching sport. We had Big Society and forgot about the financial crash of 2008, and then the curse of the Olympics began. Drug testing rules changed and more and more Russian athletes were striped of their medals in the years following. But the Olympic glow was a distant memory by then.
So, that’s all that happened that I can remember. In reality, so much has gone on that it’s too hard to process. Volumes and volumes of books will be written about the last ten years, that’s if books still exist in the future. And what is eventually written in them will probably end up being as confusing or misleading and it was when we were living through it.
My expectations are not great for 2020, but Happy New Year anyway!
