Blackcap

A new visitor

I think that it’s been about a year since the bird feeding project started. At first, nothing was expected. After all, there’d been very little birdlife in my area since I moved in. And if you don’t have the view I have you may think the same. Then just when you think that’s all there is in the area, there’s another surprise. This time it’s a female blackcap and she’s a little beauty.

The little thing might not be much to look at on first glance, but the tiny thing has come along and given me some hope. A couple visits to the window feeder are moments of joy. I know very little about blackcaps and where they come from to get here, but I’m guessing that she migrated from somewhere and wanted to join in with the fun around my feeders. For the moment there’s no sign of a Mr blackcap, but that will only be a matter of time. Or at least I think so.

In a tough week it’s often the little things that break through and change the mood. And this has been a tough week. One minute everything is looking up and then the next three days are a complete washout. This makes me think about what I’d be losing. At the same time I can think about why I didn’t do this before, but my memory is a little hazy.

This weekend I’ll read up about her and see what I can put out for her. The block feeder was used today and that mighr be all I need, but you never know. What I do know or at least expect, is that she wn’t have a huge appetite. Some suet crumbs should be enough.

I wish I was all new age. That way I could pretend that a little bird was a sign from the spirit world, sent to look over me and give some hope in tough times. On the other hand, I could just imagine that without believing it. So, that’s what I’m going to do. And if a sparrowhawk swoops down, that will be another sign. But I don’t think that will happen when there’s plenty of plump, well fed wood pigeons to take home for lunch.

So thanks for visiting, Ms blackcap. It means more to me than you might expect. Don’t be a stranger. I promise there’ll always be food for you.
