Hangover

Was it the bottle of wine? With hindsight I might have bought too much booze for Christmas. Even at the time I thought I had, but what can you do? It’s the season to eat and drink too much.

I think I had a hangover from a bottle of vino. It’s one I hadn’t had before and was in my sensible price range of no more than £6.99, which is pushing the boat out these days. All was fine. Maybe not all fine, because I opened it at 4PM, but it did last until 10PM, so I wasn’t exactly knocking it back.

Then the morning came, and went, then late morning, early afternoon, and around 4PM I almost came back to life. Something had almost knocked me out for the day, but not in a normal hangover way. This was different. I put it down to sulphates or something. Any excuse!

Jumping forward a couple of weeks to the weekend just gone and I have a whole almost lost weekend with the same symptoms. This time no alcohol had been knecked. My last drink was on New Years Day. What the hell is going on here? Having hangovers without drinking is a gift that getting older gives you.

This time I’ve definitely stopped drinking. The gin has gone – after 20 years, and the mini-keg of beer is still in the boot of my car. I think my body gave me a week and then started to wonder where the next drink was coming from. I’ve been here before. Your whole system needs to adapt and get used to getting calories solely from food. Wierd I know!

There could be other reasons though. I haven’t been well for ages and this could have been the end of it. After all, I’m doing this and I spent the day washing and tidying. Or, I might have just caught a bit of cold from a draughty window on my shaved head. The last few days have been cold, not very cold, but just cold every day.

That’s right. I shaved my head. Why? Because all the barbers are closed again and my hair was a mess. The shower of bastards running the country didn’t make the right choices – for the public – and needed to come up with half arsed emergency measures. So I did what I wish I’d done in Lockdown 1, got the beard trimmer out and did the best I could. And that could be the reason I had a headache for two days. But the good thing is that I think having almost two days in bed has done me some good. What I need to do now is build on it.
