There’s football on the telly!
Welcome back! It’s me that’s been away from here, but welcome back anyway. I’ve been on a rocky road and seem to have found myself on some smooth tarmac for a little while. All I need to do now is see if I can manage to stay on this road for a little while. This is a feeling the England football team will be having right now.
Last night was the big Battle of Britain game between England and Scotland. I really want to tell you how great it was. I really do. I really really do. And if I were Scotish I would be. But I’m not, and it wasn’t. Having said that, though football is rarely great to watch. What is important is getting together to talk about it and hoping for the moment of magic that you miss when you go for a wee break.
If you’re interested, the result was 0-0, which is fine for England and gives Scotland a chance to get out of the group if they win their last game against Croatia. Tournament football is a marathon, not a sprint, and it’s meant to boring. The important thing is winning and not entertaining. We can collectively remember how great it was after the games are over. Or we can decided that we want to be miserable and spend years complaining about the team and management not showing passion and commitment. However it works out, Gareth Southgate has done a great job. We can wish for better, but we’re not going to get it. I’m happy because we’re still in with a chance winning. Failing that, the Olympics start in two weeks, then the the Tour de France will be starting soon. And if that’s not enough, there are four sumo bashos every year. Sport doesn’t have to be beautiful, it just has to be there.
Life doesn’t have to be beautiful all the time either. Most of the time you’re not winning, but at least you’re still in the game. You might find yourself a few divisions lower than you want to be, but you can still play with style.
So that’s it. I’m backing England and I want to see what happens next. We’re not good enough to win though. My bet for the title will be Italy. But looking great in the early stages means nothing. Come on Ingerland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
