Eunice

Why did we start naming storms?

Back in the old days we had weather. When a big storm hit, it would be the Great Storm, for example the Great Storm of 1987. Then there was the problem that when a storm was given a female name, there was a perception that it would be less damaging than a storm with a male name. The answer to that was to rotate the names. And today, we are being hit by the strongest storm in decades, called Eunice. This is the one that came after Dudley, that caused a few issues in the North. It was predicted, but Eunice brewed up quickly and for the second time in a couple of weeks, two named storms have hit the UK within a day or two of each other, which is unusual.

At short notice, which was even shorter notice than the warning of the storm, Wales and the South East were warned that the storm had been upgraded from Amber to bad shit is going to happen. Although, there are some Brexity, anti-vax types that are suggesting that we should just man up and this is just British weather. But it isn’t. It’s far from it. We’re going to enjoy more storms, more flooding, and knowing our luck, global warming is going to make Britain (UK if it still exists in a couple of years) colder and snowier. Having said that, we could finally become good at the Winter Olympics. This would be bad for Scotland’s hopes of growing pineapples, but that’s just bad luck!

Where am I going with this? I’ve left it a couple of hours and it’s well past midnight. The storm has passed and I’ve avoided any damage, but I’m sure there’ll be lots of clearing up to do for other people tomorrow. I’ve had a couple of drinks tonight and I feel great. And tomorrow / today is Saturday, so there’s lots to be happy about. Just don’t watch the news. Things aren’t going great, unless you decide to think otherwise.

This is going to be a good weekend. Not great, but the days are getting longer and Spring can’t be too far away. So, yay!

That’s about it. I’ll play more chess and bring the day when I win a game one day closer. Keep your fingers crossed for me! I found enough ways to lose and surely I’ll find ways to win.
