A Question That Annoys Me

I’m fine about it. I really am. But I’m really bugged by a simple question that new work acquaintances ask. It’s quite a personal question, but not really about the person. Without knowing anything else about me, why is it normal to ask if I have any kids?

Perhaps, I should take it as a compliment. Yes, I should have loads and loads of them. I’m fit and virile. Or is it something of a bonding exercise? Perhaps they are looking for something in common, a fellow sufferer. On the other hand, it may be a status thing. Perhaps there’s a club out there I’ll never join. Or people may just feel it’s one of the few questions people who have kids feel they can ask. After all, it’s not a question people with no children would ask. No one cares about other people’s kids. And the only reply to the question is “no”. Nothing else, no insights, and no jokes.

I thought I’d have more to say. Maybe I do, and maybe not.
