Life in Black and White

Adventures with the Olympus Trip 35

I take a lot of bad pictures. You have to get the bad ones out of the way so you can get to the good ones. And when I say good, I mean good and not outstanding. But they are good enough to be good.

Take this shot of a wooden carved dog. Looking at it makes me happy. It’s not capturing a moment, but it is capturing what the artist intended.

I like this one too. By accident or design, I’ve framed it well. It was a quick shot before the lockdown when I couldn’t be bothered about waiting to be served and have to look for a table.

This one of the pylon I have named Power to the People. I was using an orange filter and now I know when to use one to increase the contrast between light and dark. I knew this to begin with, but I had no idea how normal photos would turn out.

I suppose I should include some bad shots too, in order to shatter the illusion that I know what I’m doing. But not yet. I like this one. It’s the only time I could take a photo of the playground in the park. That’s because the playground is closed due to CV-19. There’s a story and I’ve taken a half decent picture.

The table tennis tables are rarely used. My intention was to show unused and lets assume that they were always busy before the lockdown. The more I look, the less bad it is, but this is me using up the end of the film so I could send it off.

This is fine I suppose. I miss the Retinette 1b. I tried it again today and thought it was working when I wound the film on, but it wasn’t. For some reason, the cogs aren’t engaging and the film doesn’t wind on, even when it looks like it has. And now I don’t want to waste another film. The problem is that the Trip 35 is clearly a better camera.

Somehow, I seem to have almost hit my word target! The world will be in colour for a little while now. The sun is out and the light looks great. But photo opportunities are going to be limited for a while with this lockdown because of the deathy virus thing going around. There are two precious exposures left in the 66. It would have been so much easier if I could have returned to the wildlife park!
